Index Construction and Methodology
The proprietary WisdomTree Physical AI UCITS Index is designed to track companies involved in the development and commercial adoption of physical AI—intelligent machines capable of operating autonomously in the physical world. Physical AI, also referred to as embodied intelligence, describes AI systems integrated into physical machines that can perceive their environment, move, and act autonomously.
The index identifies businesses across five categories: humanoid robotics; drones and autonomous mobility; next-generation factories (smart manufacturing); next-generation logistics and supply-chain robotics; and emerging applications in sectors including healthcare, agriculture, construction and defence.
Each category receives a thematic score reflecting its weight within the physical AI ecosystem. The index currently emphasises humanoid robotics, drones and autonomous mobility. Companies are evaluated using a relevancy score, which measures the strategic significance of their physical AI activities based on technological capabilities, intellectual property, company disclosures, and revenue exposure where applicable.
Context and Market Positioning
Pierre Debru, Head of Research, Europe at WisdomTree, commented: “Physical AI is not a single sector, but a rapidly evolving new ecosystem in which intelligence is integrated into machines operating at the heart of the real economy. From an analytical perspective, this poses a challenge for investors, as value creation is spread across multiple layers, from hardware and sensors to software and autonomous platforms, and the future leaders of the sector remain to be determined. Our index construction process is specifically designed for this type of environment. We target companies that offer significant and commercially viable exposure to physical AI today, based on revenue criteria and transparent rules, to ensure that the ETF reflects the segments where value creation is actually occurring. Equally important, this methodology is designed to evolve over time through regular reallocations, allowing exposure to adjust as adoption becomes more widespread and the theme matures.”
Advances in AI model efficiency, edge-computing hardware, and sensing and perception systems are enabling machines to operate autonomously in factories, warehouses, farms, hospitals, and airspace. As computing moves to the edge, physical AI is positioned to affect productivity, industrial processes, and the structure of work across the global economy.
WisdomTree’s Thematic Franchise
The launch of WPAI complements WisdomTree’s existing Artificial Intelligence UCITS ETF, which had USD $1.1 billion in assets under management as of 30 January 2026. It extends WisdomTree’s range of thematic ETFs, which recorded USD $3.9 billion in net inflows during 2025. The firm’s thematic range managed USD $8.1 billion for investors as of the end of January 2026.
Alexis Marinof, CEO Europe at WisdomTree, said: “This launch offers investors early and structured access to a new theme, that of artificial intelligence, which transcends the software domain to materialise in the physical world. Segments such as autonomous systems and intelligent drones are still in the early stages of commercial adoption, but the direction of their development is becoming increasingly clear. Thematic ETFs are particularly relevant at this stage of a theme’s life cycle, when the opportunity is diverse, future leaders are not yet clearly identified, and value creation is occurring across an entire ecosystem. Our approach is to define these themes precisely and establish systematic exposures based on analysis and transparent rules, favouring real economic participation over speculation.”
WisdomTree reported record global assets under management of USD $144.5 billion at year-end 2025, rising to USD $160.8 billion by late January 2026. European-listed products reached USD $53.3 billion in AUM, supported by net inflows into UCITS products and thematic strategies . The firm launched more than 30 new strategies in 2025 across commodities, thematics, and tactical exposures, including funds focused on rare earths, quantum computing, and nuclear energy . As of January 2026, the company generated over USD $1.6 billion in net inflows across its global platform .
