Legal & General’s developed markets equity ETF has added a distributing share class in London and Milan, both carrying a 0.10% TER.

It is the distributing share class of Legal & General’s global equity ETF, which invests in large- and mid-cap companies across developed markets. The fund has a total expense ratio of 0.10%. The same share class also began trading on Borsa Italiana that day under the ticker LGGM.

For investors in London, the new class offers an alternative to the existing accumulating version of the same portfolio. The accumulating class, already listed on the LSE, reinvests dividends received by the fund. The distributing class, by contrast, pays those dividends out to shareholders.

The index tracked by the fund

The ETF follows the Solactive Core Developed Markets Large & Mid Cap USD Index NTR. This is a net total return index denominated in US dollars, meaning it reinvests dividends after withholding taxes.

Solactive describes the benchmark as part of its Solactive Core family. It covers large- and mid-cap companies in developed markets and represents roughly 85% of free-float market capitalisation. Its constituents are weighted by free-float market capitalisation.

Trading platform descriptions also note that the index applies minimum liquidity and size requirements. It excludes companies included in the Future World Protection List, Legal & General’s exclusion list.

The accumulating class is already listed in London

UK investors already have access to the fund through its accumulating class. The L&G Global Equity UCITS ETF (ISIN IE00BFXR5S54) trades on the London Stock Exchange under the ticker LGGL in US dollars. It has the same 0.10% TER and tracks the same index.

The fund was launched in November 2018. It is domiciled in Ireland and uses physical replication.

Distributing vs accumulating: the key difference

Both share classes hold the same portfolio. What separates them is how they handle the dividends the fund receives from its holdings:

With the accumulating class (LGGL), income is reinvested and reflected in the share price.

With the distributing class, income is paid out to shareholders at regular intervals.

The distributing version may appeal to investors seeking a steady income stream from a globally diversified equity portfolio. The choice between the two classes can also have tax implications, depending on each investor’s personal circumstances.

Conclusion

Following the listing of the L&G Global Equity UCITS ETF USD Dist, London Stock Exchange investors can now choose between two share classes of the same Legal & General global equity ETF: LGGL, which accumulates income, and the new distributing class. Both track the Solactive Core Developed Markets Large & Mid Cap USD Index NTR and charge a TER of 0.10%.
