ETFGI report on ETFs and ETPs in Europe – September 2023

ETFGI reports that assets invested in ETFs industry in Europe gathered US$6.95 billion in net inflows in September

ETFGI, a leading independent research and consultancy firm covering trends in the global ETFs ecosystem, reported today that the ETFs industry in Europe gathered net inflows of US$6.95 billion during September, bringing year-to-date net inflows to US$103.00 billion. During the month, assets invested in the European ETF/ETP industry decreased by 3.6% from US$1.66 trillion at the end of August to US$1.60 trillion, according to ETFGI’s September 2023 European ETFs and ETPs industry landscape insights report. (All dollar values in USD unless otherwise noted.)

Highlights

  • ETFs industry in Europe gathered net inflows of $6.95 Bn in September.
  • YTD net inflows in 2023 of $103.00 Bn are second highest on record after YTD net inflows of $154.02 Bn in 2021.
  • YTD net inflows of $103.00 Bn are significantly higher than the YTD $61.46 Bn and full year $88.96Bn gathered in 2022.
  • 12th month of consecutive net inflows.
  • Assets have increased 12.6% YTD in 2023, going from $1.42 Tn at end of 2022 to $1.60 Tn.

“The S&P 500 decreased by 4.77% in September and is up 13.07% YTD in 2023. Developed markets excluding the US decreased by 3.54% in September and are up 6.66% YTD in 2023. Netherlands (down 7.90%) and Ireland (down 7.31%) saw the largest decreases amongst the developed markets in September. Emerging markets decreased by 1.86% during September but are up 3.47% YTD in 2023. Thailand (down 9.38%) and Poland (down 9.33%) saw the largest decreases amongst emerging markets in September.” According to Deborah Fuhr, managing partner, founder, and owner of ETFGI. 

Europe ETFs and ETPs asset growth as at the end of September 2023

The ETFs industry in European had 2,932 products, with 11,964 listings, assets of $1.598 Tn, from 99 providers listed on 29 exchanges in 24 countries at the end of Sept.

During September, ETFs gathered net inflows to US$6.95 billion. Equity ETFs gathered net inflows of 
$6.58 Bn over September, bringing YTD net inflows to $55.41 Bn, higher than the $43.05 Bn in net inflows YTD in 2022. Fixed income ETFs had net inflows of $1.39 Bn during September, bringing YTD net inflows to $46.21 Bn, higher than the $18.13 Bn in YTD net inflows in 2022. Commodities ETFs/ETPs reported net outflows of $1.79 Bn during September, bringing YTD net outflows to $4.60 Bn, much lower than the $2.51 Bn in YTD net outflows in 2022. Active ETFs attracted net inflows of $778 Mn over the month, gathering YTD net inflows of $6.03 Bn, much higher than the $1.68 Bn in net inflows YTD in 2022.

Substantial inflows can be attributed to the top 20 ETFs by net new assets, which collectively gathered $9.06 Bn during September. iShares Core MSCI World UCITS ETF – Acc (IWDA LN) gathered $1.44 Bn, the largest individual net inflow.
