A new study has shown retail stock market traders favour energy stocks as the top investment theme, outpacing artificial intelligence (AI). Research among investors, carried out by GraniteShares, found 36% selected energy and rising oil prices as their top performing investment theme. AI came in second place with 30%.
Looking at individual companies, BP (44%) and Shell (37%) were top chosen as strong performers. 40% of respondents expect AstraZeneca to perform strongly over the next six months. Conversely, when asked about market laggards, investors expect Lloyds Banking Group (34% of respondents), Rolls Royce (33%) and Rio Tinto (30%) to struggle.
GraniteShares, which offers a range of exchange traded products (ETPs) listed on national exchanges, enables investors to go long or short on a range of leading UK shares.
The table below shows the top five investment themes selected by UK retail traders.
| Theme | Proportion of respondents with a positive outlook |
| Energy and rising oil prices | 36% |
| Artificial intelligence | 30% |
| Big tech | 27% |
| Banks | 24% |
| Electric and self-driving cars | 24% |
Will Rhind, Founder and CEO of GraniteShares:
“Artificial intelligence was a major theme earlier this year, rapidly gaining traction with institutional investors. But, with oil prices rising once again, individuals still see a lot of interest in oil and energy producers. Markets are volatile and we know there is a real split of opinions. In our range, we have seen interest from sophisticated investors in both long and short ETPs on the same stocks.”
