            • Monthly record high in the number of trades, at 4.56 million, up 53% from January 2010
            • The value of ETF trading was double that of the previous month
            • Trading on BME’s Derivatives Market, MEFF, reached 6.3 million contracts in January, up 16% year-on-year.
            • The trading volume on BME’s Corporate Debt Market, AIAF, came in at €572 billion, up 138% from the same period in 2010.

            Equities

            In January the trading volume on the Spanish Exchange amounted to €98.77 billion, which represents a 14% increase from the same month a year earlier. During this month the number of trades came in at 4.56 million, which represents a 53% rise from January 2010 and a monthly record high.

            The value of trading on the ETF segment in January was €366 million, up 0.8% from the same month a year earlier and up 101% over the previous month. The number of trades on the ETF segment in January came in at 5,261, up 72% over the previous month. The figure represents a 9% decrease compared to the same month in 2010.

            Futures and Options

            BME’s Derivatives Market, MEFF, traded 6.3 million Futures and Options contracts in January, up 16% year-on-year.

            In January there was heavy trading in Futures on Stocks, at 2.29 million contracts, a 130% rise from the same month a year earlier.

            There was also heavy trading in Index Futures, which posted growth in January of 21%, at 845,891 contracts, of which 552,026 corresponded to IBEX 35 Futures, up 21% year-on-year, and 293,758 contracts corresponded to Mini Futures, up 21.4% year-on-year.

            Warrants and Certificates

            The number of warrants issued in January 2010 came in at 361.Trading volumes in January on the warrants and certificates market came in at €154 million, up 55% from January 2010. The number of trades was 28,881, up 19.1% with respect to the same period a year ago.

            Corporate Debt

            Corporate Debt trading on BME’s Debt Market, AIAF, in January reached €572 billion, up 138% year-on-year.

            New issues in January came in at €22.60 billion, down 7.7% from the same month in 2010.The outstanding balance of Corporate Debt at the end of January was €855.82 billion, down 1.9% from the same period a year earlier.

            In January the traded volume on BME’s Public Debt platform came in at €4.44 billion, down 67% compared to the same month in 2010.
